Kenneth “Ken” Lee Shaw, 84, of Nevada, passed away Saturday, June 15, 2019, at MercyOne
in Des Moines.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 19th at Rasmusson-Ryan Funeral Home (1418
Fawcett Pkwy) in Nevada. A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 20th at Central
Presbyterian Church (932 5th Street) in Nevada with The Reverend John Malacek officiating.

Ken was born May 15th, 1935, in Redding, Iowa the son of Howard and Gladys (Polley) Shaw. He
graduated from Lone Tree High School in 1953 and obtained his bachelor’s degree at Iowa
Wesleyan College. He then went on to earn his Master’s Degree at the University of Iowa and
later his Superintendent Certification. On March 23, 1957, he was united in marriage to Carolyn
McMahon in Mt. Pleasant, IA. He went on to serve in the United States Army, including the Army Reserve for many years before embarking on a lifetime career in public education. After serving in multiple schools as a teacher, principal, and superintendent, he spent the last 23 years of his career as the Superintendent of the Nevada Community School District, before retiring in 1997.

Ken was a current member of Nevada Golden K and Central Presbyterian Church in Nevada, including many years on the Church Session. Past memberships and positions included being on the Iowa High School High School Athletic Association Rep Council and President of the Area 11 Superintendents. He enjoyed gardening, golfing, traveling, and reading, in addition to being an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Cub fan. However, Ken’s ultimate sports enjoyment came from attending both his children’s and grandchildren’s athletic events.

Ken is survived by his wife, Carolyn of Nevada; his children: Mike (Vicki) Shaw of Davenport,
Mark (Tina) Shaw of Grinnell and Julie Shaw of Phoenix, AZ; his sisters: Ann (Don) Stahly of
Iowa City and Donna (John) Reichardt of Solon; eight grandchildren and eight great-
grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family to establish a scholarship in Ken’s name at Nevada Community Schools and/or donations can be made to the Nevada Central Presbyterian Church.

Rasmusson-Ryan Funeral Home in Nevada is handling arrangements.
