Charles Mellows, age 91, formerly of Hubbard, IA, passed away on Monday, June 24, 2019 at Bethany Life Communities in Story City, IA.

Charles Coe Mellows, Jr. was born March 6, 1928, in Marshalltown, Iowa, the only child of Oveda (Olson) and Charles Coe Mellows, Sr.

Chuck grew up in Marshalltown, attended school and graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1945.

After high school, he served in the Army of the United States at the end of WWII. He attended Marshalltown Area Community College and Drake University.

Chuck was an athlete and had a stellar high school and junior college basketball career.

Charles developed a strong work ethic at an early age as he held a variety of jobs: mowing yards, carrying newspapers, and caddying at the country club where he learned to play golf and developed a love for the sport.

He is remembered for his quick wit, sense of humor, sharp mind, intellect, and integrity. He never met a stranger. All these strong personality traits served him well in a wide variety of career choices. He was an Iowa State Highway Patrolman and was a salesman for Swift & Company in Davenport where he met and married Laura Louise Clements. They were married in 1953 and together they raised five children.

He began his newspaper career in advertising sales at Galesburg, IL, before moving back to Iowa where he worked at the Marshalltown Times-Republican, Newton Daily News, Johnson Hills Press, and Nevada Journal; then he became a publisher when he purchased and merged the Hubbard Review and the Radcliffe Signal. He later purchased the Meservey-Thorton, Rockwell-Swaldale newspapers which he combined to make the Southern County News.

Chuck and Laura retired and wintered in Sarasota, FL, for several years and then remained in Ames until he went to Bethany Life Communities on April 1, 2019.
Chuck passed away peacefully at the age of 91, on June 24, 2019 in Story City, IA, surrounded by family and friends.

Those remaining to cherish his memory include his children Sue Mellows (Shelton Smith) of Englewood, CO, Joyce (Clyde) Strong of Gilbert, IA, Michael Mellows (Linda Kingsbury) of Nevada, IA and Connie Anderson (Jerry Banta) of Golden City, MO; six grandchildren, Ian Oatman and Aspen Oatman of Englewood, CO, Chad (Kendall) Moore of Windsor, CO, Machelle Anderson and Jayde Anderson of Carthage, MO, Jennifer (Tripp) Wiggins of Austin, TX; nine great-grandchildren; Dakota Ryans, Sierra Ryans Oatman, Riley Moore, Ryker Moore, Jaxsyn Anderson, Bayler Anderson, Dylan Wiggins, Alex Wiggins and Addison Wiggins; along with many other relatives and friends.
