Services Friday For Mrs. Anna Halleland

Mrs. Anna Halleland was laid to rest Friday afternoon in the Story City cemetery, following services at the St. Petri church. At 1:30 p. m., a brief service was held at the Larson-Peterson Funeral home, conducted by her pastor, Rev. S. T. Nelson. Rev. Nelson. Rev. Nelson sang "Den Store Hvide Flok" in Norwegian, gave a scripture lesson and a prayer.

Casket bearers were all relatives of the deceased: Dr. Keith Olsan of Springfield, Ill., Herbert Junior Halleland of Randall, both grandsons -- Burdell Brekken of Minneapolis, Minn., and Robert D. Looft of Boxholm; husbands of two of the granddaughters, and Eric Hill of Marshalltown and Rudd Hill of Forest City, both nephews of Mrs. Halleland.

Immediately following the prayer at the Funeral Home, the church services were held, with Mrs. Marjorie Jacobson Kinney of Ames, soloist. Mrs. Kinney sang "I Know of a Sleep in Jesus Name", and at the close of the service, "The Lord's Prayer." A lovely tribute to this 84-year-old mother was given by Rev. Nelson, and a message of hope and comfort to the family and friend of the departed.

The flowers were unusually beautiful and a lovely reminder of the long and useful life of this woman of so many sterling qualities. Gifts of money in sizeable amounts given in her memory were made to St. Petri Church Building fund, Sunset home at Story City, missions and Story City Municipal hospital.

Obituary

Anna Karen Kold was born June 12, 1866, in Gjovik, Norway. She was one of a family of three children her parents being Tollef and Karen Kold. She same to this country when a girl of about 14 years; immediately after being confirmed; locating in Story City. She became a member of the St. Petri church when a young lady of 19, and at the time of her death was a devout member of that church. Several years ago, she automatically became an honorary member of the St. Petri Ladies Aid.

In 1886, she was untied in marriage to Helge Halleland, in the church of her choice ad to this union was born six children: Betsy Born of Story City, Peter R. of Nevada, Agnes (Mrs. Lumer Olsan) of Springfield, Ill., Thora (Mrs. H. J. Jacobson) of Story City, Herbert J. of Randall and Hildreth (Mrs. E. E. Moore) of Webster City.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Gustav Amlund, and a brother, Gustav Kold.

On July 1st, 1906, she was left a widow with a family of children, the eldest of whom was but 17 and the youngest a babe of one year. Her entire family was baptized and confirmed in the St. Petri church. Besides rearing her family, she cared for her widowed mother until her death. The mother lived with this family for 16 years.*

Mrs. Halleland was a person of unusual fortitude, and altho she had a tremendous task in raising her family, she was always willing and ready to counsel with those having problems and always there when the burden was too heavy to bear.

Since the first of this year she has been in failing health, but he will to live and her great faith sustained her, and only two weeks ago had she taken to her bed. All possible was done for her, that medical skill and loving care could do, but the final rest came on Monday morning, April 3, about 9 o'clock, in the home where she had lived for 62 years.

Survivors

Besides her immediate family of six children, she leaves to mourn her passing, 11 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Relatives and friends from Minneapolis, Minn., Forest City, Iowa, Webster City, Jewell, Randall, Ames, Des Moines, Marshalltown, Nevada and Iowa City were present to pay tribute to the departed.

*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: The mother of Anna Karen (Kold) Halleland was Karen Kold. Karen Kold was born 10 February 1822 in Norway and died 21 October 1911 in Story City, Story County, Iowa.
