Carrie Malmin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. Malmin was born in Sandnes, Norway, Sept. 25, 1876 and passed away April 6, 1928 at her home southwest of town at the age of 51 years. With her parents she immigrated to this country in 1881, locating at Roland, Iowa, later they moved to the Malmin farm on the west edge of McCallsburg. On April 3, 1897 she was united in marriage to Ole C. Hougen and they went to housekeeping o the farm two miles southwest of town where she has continuously resided since. To this union 10 children were born two having died in infancy and the eight living are Jeffrey, Maurice, Harold, Chester, Mildred, Kermit, Hazel and Vivian who with the husband are left to mourn the loss of a devoted mother and wife. Mrs. Hougen also leaves her mother, Mrs. Malmin, 3 brothers, Harry, Gerhard of McCallsburg, Martin of Minneapolis; and 3 sisters, Mrs. O. V. Olson and Mrs. Peter Egenes of McCallsburg and Mrs. Tom Grimsley of Clear Lake, Minn.
Mrs. Hougen was a faithful member of the Bethany Lutheran church and the Ladies Aid society and was very much interested in all the work of the church and will be greatly missed among the workers. She was a member of the Cemetery association and was serving as president the second year at the time of her death. Mrs. Hougen had been in failing health for some time, but her condition was not considered critical so her death Friday morning which resulted from a stroke about 1 o'clock in the night, came as a shock to family and friends. Mrs. Hougen is going to be missed sadly in the home where the youngest child is only 12 years of age.
Among the out of town people attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. John Hougen and daughter Lillian and sons Ernest and Byron of Story City, Mrs. Herbert Paulson of Ames, Mrs. Tom Grimsley of Clear Lake, Minn., and Martin Malmin of Minneapolis and Gaylord Hougen of Marion. There were quite a number of relatives and friends from Roland and other places. The family are extended the sincere sympathy of the community in their sorrow.
Mrs. Hougen had been rapidly failing in health for some time, but little did we think that she was so soon to be called to that Home where there is no sickness, nor sorrow, nor death. The floral offerings were beautiful. Her mother, sisters and brothers gave $25.00 to the Mission in her memory. Her relatives at Roland gave $5.00 and the Lutheran Ladies Aid of which she had been a faithful member gave $10.00 to the Mission in memory of her. A dear wife, and mother is gone, but her sacred memory will live on forever.
