Aged County Pioneer Was Laid to Rest

Special to the Journal.
Ames, Aug. 13.--Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah O'Brien, pioneer of this county, who died at her home here Saturday, were held Monday afternoon and she was laid to rest in the local cemetery.

Mrs. O'Brien, 87, was one of the real pioneers of this part of Story County and was the widow of two Civil war veterans. Her first husband was Hervey H. Heistand [sic], who was wounded during the war and died a Keokuk, and Col. S. P. O'Brien, who was not only a civil war veteran, but a soldier of the Mexican war.

Mrs. O'Brien was the daughter of Judge Evans, who came to Iowa in 1852 and was the first Judge in Story county. Col. O'Brien was the first school commissioner and the first assessor of this county. Mrs. O'Brien is survived by her daughter* at whose home she died and two sons by first marriage.

*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: Sarah Evans married (1) Harvey James Hiestand on 31 December 1854 in Story County, Iowa and (2) Lewis J. Jones on 15 January 1871 in Story County, Iowa. There are no know issue of this marriage and they divorced 6 Octobr 1874 in Story County, Iowa. Sarah married (3) Stephen Parker O'Brien on 24 December 1884 in the M. E. Parsonage in Ames, Story County, Iowa.

The three children of Sarah (Evans) Hiestand were: Samuel Evans Hiestand, Alonzo Bond Hiestand and Leonora (Hiestand) Clark. Leonora was the wife of Albert O. Clark.
