Many Attend Rites For Lewis Roe, 80

Funeral services for Lewis Roe, who passed away at his home in Huxley Tuesday evening, Sept. 28, were held on Friday at 2 o'clock at the Bethany Lutheran church at Kelley, following a prayer service at the home at 1:30. Rev. P. E. Onstad officiated and was assisted by Rev. O. C. Hellekson.

The church was profusely decorated with beautiful floral offerings.

Devotions were by Rev. Hellekson and the sermon by Rev. Onstad, who also sang one vocal solo, "Asleep in Jesus." Donald Fuller sang, "In the Garden" and Lowell Accola sang "Abide With Me."

The pall bearers were grandsons and nephews of the deceased Clyde Roe, Jr., John Roe, Conrad Roe, Archie Roe, Lewis Roe and Elmer Torgerson.

Mrs. Clyde Rosenfeld and Mrs. Clyde Sensland had charge of the flowers.

Burial was in the Kelley cemetery.

The church was filled with relatives and friends from far and near -- nearly all the nearby towns were represented -- with many from Ames, where he had lived for some time and relatives from many points in Iowa and Minnesota.

His was a long life, well spent.

Obituary

Lewis Roe, son of Ole and Katrine Roe, was born July 38, 1868 in Skanevik, Norway. He passed away at his home in Huxley, Iowa, Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1948, at 8:40 p.m. at the age of 80 years and two months.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Skaanevik.

At the age of 14 years he came to the U. S. and worked for number of years for the Milwaukee railroad.

On Nov. 30, 1893, he was united in marriage to Jennie Ryerson. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where they made their home for three years, then moved to Adams, Minnesota, where they lived two years. They came back to Iowa in 1897 and bought a farm in Washington township, east of Kelley. In 1919 they moved to Ames, where he was employed at Iowa State college for 15 years. The next move was back to the farm near Kelley, where they lived until poor health forced them to sell out and buy and house in Huxley, where he lived until his death.

He was a devoted father, always interested in his family and friends, and always ready to lend a helping hand. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

His wife preceded him in death on March 3, 1946.

He is survived by five children, Clyde and Orrie of Sioux City, Hiram of San Jose, Calif., Mrs. Isabel Bentley of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Mrs. Lorraine Amlund of Huxley. Also mourning his passing are seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one sister Mrs. Bertha Tesdall of Slater.
