From Iowa Funeral Planning, Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa.

Norva Twiliene Charter, 83 passed away on April 12, 2019 at Accura Healthcare of Ames. Her funeral will be at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 17 at Slater Baptist Church in Slater, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m.

Norva was born August 16, 1935 in Guthrie County, Iowa. She attended school in Guthrie Center. After high school she held several jobs including working at the Dairy Den in Guthrie Center. It was owned by Gaylord Charter, her future Father-in-Law. It was there that she met Larry. She was united in marriage to Larry D. Charter on July 26, 1963. Norva and Larry had two sons, Bryan and David.

After they were married, Norva and Larry moved to Des Moines. Norva worked several jobs including the Great Plains Bag Company. In 1975 Norva lost her leg in a motorcycle accident. Although it changed her life in an instant, it did not define her. She lived life to the fullest and was always up for an adventure. If you were going somewhere or doing something she was always ready to go. During the last 40 years of her life she did more things with one leg than most people do with two. She loved people and enjoyed doing things for others. She was a true inspiration to her family.

Norva enjoyed time with her grandchildren, and spending time with friends including those from the Red Hat Society. She was a longtime member of Slater Baptist Church and was involved in Bible Studies and many activities at the church. Norva enjoyed baking cakes for holidays and family gatherings. Her grandchildren always had a special cake from her for their birthdays. She also made the wedding cakes for both of her sons’ weddings. She enjoyed scrapbooking and swimming. For years, you could find her at the Boone YMCA three times a week doing water aerobics, swimming and Tai Chi. She loved playing cards and games with her family. Norva and Larry owned a cabin at Lake Rathbun and enjoyed spending time down there each summer.

Norva is survived by her two sons, Bryan (Sandi) Charter of Ames and David (Mary) Charter of Woodward; three grandsons, Scott Toms of Boone and Taylor and Kyle Charter of Ames; two granddaughters, Ariel and Micki Charter of Woodward; one sister, Lila Moore of Panora, Iowa and her husband Leroy.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Slater Baptist Church.
