REAL PIONEER OF COUNTY IS DEAD

MRS. A. B. GRIFFITH, 88, DIED AT HOME OF DAUGHTER IN MARSHALLTOWN

Funeral services for Mrs. Susan A. Griffith, 88, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. H. Henrickson, 810 South Third avenue, Marshalltown, at an early hour Thursday morning, will be held from the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. C. Harris, at 1110 Ninth street, Saturday afternoon at two o'clock, after which the body will be taken to the Pleasant Run cemetery, in Mullen Settlement, for interment. A prayer service will be held at the Hendrickson home in Marshalltown at 10 a. m., before the funeral party leaves for Nevada.

The deceased was born Susan A. Thomas, daughter of John S. and Julia Ann Thomas, at Delphi, Indiana, May 8, 1841. She was born Susan A. She was a girl twelve years of age when she came with her parents to Iowa and located on a farm southeast of Nevada in Story county.

She was married to Asa B. Griffith at Nevada, October 17, 1861 and their home was ever afterwards in Story county. Eight children were born to this union and four of these, with the husvand have preceeded her in death. The husband died July 13, 1914.

Mr. and Mrs. Griffith lived in several towns of Story county including Ames and McCallsburg, and near Story City, later moving to Nevada. Here Mr. Griffith died and it was about five years ago that Mrs. Griffith went to Marshalltown to make her home with the daughter Mrs. Hendrickson.

She leaves the sons, U. S. Griffith of Ames and O. H. Griffith of Des Moines and the daughter Mrs. C. C. Harris of Nevada and Mrs. C. H. Hendrickson of Marshalltown. There are also 18 grandchildren and the same number of great grandchildren.

There are also surviving two brothers and one sister, they being T. H. Thomas of southeast of Nevada, Mrs. William Shickel of Maxwell and J. P. Thomas of Los Gatos, California.

Mrs. Griffith was one of the real pioneer settlers in Story county, coming here in 1853 and lived here continuously since. This with the exception of the past five years when she had been with her daughter, Mrs. Hendrickson in Marshalltown, where she died.
