James Edward Pickett, Jr.
June 15, 1919, to May 2, 1994James Edward Pickett, Jr., of Las Cruces, N.M., formerly of Nevada, died at his home in Las Cruces.
He was born to James Edward and Macie (Sapp) Pickett in Winston-Salem, N.C. He attended public schools in Randleman, N.C. In 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he spent most of his tour in Hawaii. In 1945, he transferred to N.A.S. Jacksonville, Fla. and then to Bronson Field, Pensacola, Fla., where he met Barbara Cessna, who was also in the Navy. In 1946, they married. In 1947, they were discharged and moved to Nevada, where he attended the University of Iowa printing school. He worked for the Nevada Evening Journal and the Ames Tribune until 1955 when he moved to Boulder, Colo. He worked for Johnson Publishing Co. for 28 years until he retired in 1983. In 1988, he removed to New Mexico where he lived until his death.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara, of Law Cruces; two sons, James Cessna Pickett of Las Cruces and Thomas Edward Pickett of Boulder, Colo.; his daughter-in-law, Sherryl; his granddaughter, Kathryn Taylor Pickett;a dn three cousins, Florence Stone, Mauda Davenport and Claude Pickett, all of North Carolina.
He was cremated and a memorial service was held May 6 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Las Cruces, with Pastor Terry Pletkovich officiating. A private committal was held. Baca's Funeral Chapel, Las Cruces, was in charge of arrangements.
