Last of Pioneer McCord Family Dies in Oklahoma

Sherman G. McCord, about 77, last of nine children of a pioneer Story county family, died at his home at Lawton, Okla., Thursday.

After brief services at Lawton, the body will be brought to Nevada, arriving here early Saturday morning and funeral rites will be held at the pioneer church at Iowa Center Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, after which burial will be in the family lot of the nearby Evergreen cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. McCord had been residents of Lawton, Okla., for 15 years or more, where their daughter Adah, now Mrs. Ozmun, had been located for some time previous.

He was a son of Commodore P. McCord and Sarah E. Smith McCord. The father was a native of Ohio and came to Iowa in 1850, settling first in Des Moines county. Two years later he came to Story county and settled on a farm in Collins township in the southeast part of the county. He served during the Civil War and returning raised a family of nine children. After farming for a few years he was elected the first county auditor of Story county. In 1883 the family moved back to Nevada, where he passed away in 1886.

The children of this pioneer family were Jacob W. McCord; Mary, who was the wife of John Ray; Nancy, the wife of James T. White; Arbraham, who lived and died in Collins township; Alice, who remained in the home, passed away a number of years ago; Rachel E., wife of Clifford Funk; Sherman G., subject of this sketch; Elias S., who died as a practicing physician and Charles P., long-prominent citizen of Nevada.

Sherman G. McCord leaves his wife, one son Glen now living at Marshalltown and the daughter Adah, now Mrs. Ozmun of Lawton, and a number of nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

Among the latter are Earl A. McCord, steward of the Story county farm, a son of A. S. McCord, and Mrs. Velda Ringheim of Nevada, a daughter of Chas. P. McCord.

The McCord family was long prominent in Indian Creek and Collins township circles, where many of them lived throughout their lives.

The several years previous to Mr. and Mrs. McCord's moving to Oklahoma, they had their home in Nevada, where the former was engaged in the real estate business and other lines of endeavor.
