Funeral Rites Held at Maxwell for Pioneer Resident

Maxwell, Jan. 13--Funeral rites for Mrs. Amelia Harmon, 88, widow of the later Henry Harmon were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Methodist church with Rev. W. S. Kight of Des Moines, former pastor and Rev. John C. Turner in charge. The main auditorium of the church was well filled with relatives, neighbors and friends who came to pay a last tribute of respect. With Mrs. Gerton Nelson at the piano, Mrs. Ray Gooden and Mrs. H. C. Larsen sang, "Old Rugged Cross," "In the Garden," and "Under His Wings."

The casket-bearers were Roy Bell, George Rupp, Kenneth Tomlinson, Henry Tomlinson, Ross Olinger and David Pearson. The floral tribute were many and most beautiful. Rev. Turner read the following brief life sketch:

"Emma Cook Harmon, daughter George and Hannah Cook, was born in Hartford county, Maryland, June 8, 1859, and passed away at her home in Maxwell, January 7th, 1943, age 83 years and seven months.

"At about the age of fifteen she came with her parents to Iowa, who settled in Peoria. On Feb. 6, 1881 she was united in marriage to Henry A. Harmon. To them four children were born, namely Vern Harmon, Jay Harmon, Mabel Hansen of Maxwell and Myrtle Evans of Collins, all surviving her. She also leaves five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, one brother, Ben Cook of Des Moines, two half brothers, Jim and Frank Cook of Pontiac, Michigan.

"She joined the Methodist Church at Peoria at an early age of which she lived at steadfast member until her death. During her last weeks of illness she was often heard saying, "The Lod is my shepherd, I shall not want," and asking Him every day to relieve her of her suffering.

"She was preceded in death by her husband in 1934. She was a good wife, a loving mother and a good neighbor. All who knew her will mourn her passing."

Burial was made in the family lot in the Peoria cemetery.
