Funeral Services Held For Mary Ella Boston

The last rites for Mrs. Ella Boston, a McCallsburg pioneer, was held Thursday, Nov. 3 at 2:00 p.m. at the Presbyterian church in McCallsburg with her pastor Rev. Donald Jafvert in charge.

The casket bearers were Walter Rasmussen and Will Mehlow of Nevada, Floyd Steelman of Zearing, Peter Egenes, Jim Hall and J. M. Olson of McCallsburg.

In charge of the many lovely floral gifts were Mrs. Delmer Helland an Mrs. Richard Johnson. There were also a number of memorial gifts also.

Mrs. Herbert Eddy presided at the organ and also accompanied Mrs. F. E. Nail and Catherine Craig who sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Beyond the Sunset."

Burial was in the McCallsburg cemetery.

Obituary

Mary Ella Boston a daughter of pioneer parents Charles and Eliza Hendrickson was born Nov. 14, 1866 on a farm in Lincoln Township north of Zearing, one of seven children and the last of the family.

She came with her parents to McCallsburg at the age of 15. Her parents operated a boarding house. This was the year the first railroad was built through McCallsburg, the M and S L and they boarded the workmen.

She was married on December 25, 1885 in Nevada to John A. Boston. To this unions three children were born Grace (Mrs. Enoch Cole) deceased, Nora (Mrs. Maurice Britton) of Nevada and Glenn of McCallsburg.

Mr. and Mrs. Boston were engaged in many pioneer businesses in this area. They operated a hardware store, a general store, hotel but their chief occupations was that of farming.

Mrs. Boston always worked hard and labored long to help her husband make a livelihood for the family.

Mrs. Boston had enjoyed good health up to her last illness. She had lived alone since the death of her husband January 5, 1931 and has been able to care for her home yard and garden. She began to fail in health two months ago and went to stay with the daughter Mrs. Britton in Nevada where every care was given her but the last two weeks was spent at the Story County Hospital in Nevada where she passed away in the early hours on the 1st day of November. She would have been 89 on Nov. 14.

Mrs. Boston was for many years an active member of the Presbyterian church Dorcas Society and a member of the church communion, and for many years a regular attendant at Sunday school.

Relatives from away in attendance were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Houseman and son Vincent of Clinton, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Plants and family of Mason City, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Britton of Marshalltown and Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Boston and family of Zearing. Friends included Mrs. Laverne Quam and Mrs. Oscar J. Helland of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Loney, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Reubenbauer and son Wayne, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Zeissneiss and Miss Marie Schmellik all of Marshalltown, and others from surrounding towns.

Dinner was served the family and lunch following the funeral to relatives and friends by the Dorcas society.
