Funeral Services For Pioneer Woman

Special to the Journal.
Colo, April 13--Funeral services for Mrs. W. D. Martin, 87, pioneer of this county, were held at the Colo Methodist church Tuesday, April 12, at 2 p.m. in charge of the pastor, Harold H. Stark.

Music was furnished by a quartette composed of Mr. and Mrs. Sherm Rinehart, Mrs. G. L. Lounsberry, and Mr. C. B. Wilson with Mrs. S. B. Goodenow at the piano.

The pall bearers were Messrs. H. E. Ransom, Wm. Donelson, Geo. Granger, Chas. Fleming, John Mead and A. A. White.

Nancy P., daughter of George A. and Dorothy Bellinger Loucks, was born at Oxford, Michigan, July 22, 1839 and died at the home of her son, Edward G. Schoonover in Colo, April 10, 1927, age 87 years, 8 months and 18 days, death being the result of the infirmities of old age.

Sometime during her childhood left Michigan, going to Rockford, Ill., and from there they moved to Canton, Mo., coming from there to Story county, Iowa and locating in the Pleasant Grove neighborhood, during the year 1880.

On January 1, 1863 she was united in marriage with George F. Schoonover. To this union were born two sons John H. who preceded her in death December 5, 1895, and Edward G. now living in Colo. Consumption contracted during the Civil war took her husband from her April 2, 1867.

February 28, 1878 she was united in marriage with Wm. D. Martin. To this union one son was born, Ernest W. now residing near Colo. With her husband she moved to the Dalton neighborhood in 1879. She united with the United Brethren church of that place in 1884, being a member of the same until 1899 when they moved to Colo. Soon after coming to Colo she an her husband united with the Methodist church, being active and faithful members the rest of their lives. Mr. Martin preceded her in death May 23, 1915.

Mrs. Martin was the last one of her family. Surely the kindly deeds performed and the inspiration of her life will cause the memory of her and her family to live on many years in the hearts of those who knew her. Looking back over her long and useful life we are lead to exclaim "Death to the believer is not like the evening star sinking into darkness, but like the morning star lost in the brightness of the day." Undoubtedly this was her thought as she realized that the end was not many months away.

She leaves to mourn her passing, two sons, Edward G. Schoonover and Ernest W. Martin both of Colo; five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

As we bid her goodbye we are moved to say,
"Servant of God, well done"
Thy glorious warfare's past,
The battle's fought, the race is won,
And thou art crowned at last.
