Obituary for Dorathy Theora Severson

Dorathy T. Severson, 98, of Ames passed away December 30, 2018 at Bickford Cottage in Ames at the age of 98. A Celebration of Life Service will be Saturday January 5 at 11 am at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater. Visitation will be an hour prior to the service at the church.

Dorathy was born on July 8, 1920 to Thomas and Elsbeth (Rimathe) Weeks. She grew up in rural Slater and attended grade school at the Liberty Country School and graduated from Slater High School in 1937. On December 19, 1943 she married Wayne Severson. They later divorced. Dorathy was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and her family was very important to her and she always enjoyed sharing stories of her life growing up with brothers, William, Ervin and Robert and sisters, Ruby, June and Marian Mae.

Dorathy is survived by two sons, Allan (Shari) Severson and Richard Severson; a daughter, Brenda (Stephen) Thompson; four grandchildren, Jeff Severson, Jason (Diane) Severson, Molly (Ryan) Pond and Taylor (Erin) Thompson; six great grandchildren, Sadie Severson, Colby Severson, Margaux Thompson, Ingrid Thompson, Rhone Pond and Hudson Pond; two sisters-in-law, Elaine Weeks and Mary Severson and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers and sisters.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to many who have cared for Dorathy the last year from Ballard Creek Assisted Living, Bickford Cottage of Ames and St. Croix Hospice. And many thanks to Dorathy’s nieces, Barb Mallon and Susan Skei for their caring support.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church or Slater Area Historical Assoc. Soderstrum Funeral Home in Slater is entrusted with arrangements.
