Nevada Painter's Car Plunges Down Ames Embankment

Royal Buchanan Nash, 42, of Nevada was fatally injured about midnight last night when his car ran off a country road just outside of the Ames city limits east of the Ames municipal cemetery on 13th street.

The unmarried Nevada painter and decorator and former Iowa State Teachers college and central Iowa semi-pro baseball player died after his 1940 Chevrolet skidded down a 20-foot embankment on a country road.

Dorothy Cook, 18 of Nevada, a passenger in the Nash vehicle, walked about three-fourths of a mile west from the scene of accident before hailing down a passing motorist who notified police.

Although suffering from facial cuts and shock, Miss Cook accompanied Elmer Taylor, believed of Ames, the passing motorist, back to the overturned auto but by this time, it was reported, Nash had died.

Rites Wednesday

Funeral services for the World War II veteran will be held at 2:30 p. m. Wednesday at the Ryan funeral home in Nevada. The Rev. Floyd Smith, Nevada Methodist pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Nevada cemetery.

Surviving Nash are his parents, Royal and Alta Nash, 427 N avenue, Nevada; two sisters, Mrs. Luverne Kooker, Des Moines, and Mrs. Kenneth (Marjorie) Nelson, Nevada, and two nephews, James Craig and Thomas Lynn Nelson, sons of Mr. and Mrs Kenneth Nelson.

Nash was born March 15,, 1907. He was a graduate of Iowa State Teachers college.

Road Icy

According to Story County Sheriff Ivan Shalley, who investigated the mishap along with Patrolmen Melvin Hove and Lyle Williams and Sergeant Harold Green of Ames, the road was slippery with ice where the car went off the high embankment. The vehicle landed on its nose and then rolled over on its side, it was reported. Nash died of extreme multiple injuries, according to Dr. R. H. Mordaunt, Nevada county coroner.

The accident was reported to Ames police about five minutes before midnight and it was believed it had occurred about a half hour before that time.

Miss Cook, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Cook, 1329 Fourth street, Nevada, was to be x-rayed at Mary Greeley hospital in Ames today for a possible back injury.
