Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Dennis Dale Michel, 73, of Story City, passed away on November 6, 2018, after a courageous battle with cancer.

From humble and loving beginnings in rural Nebraska to a full and loving life in Iowa, Denny built lifelong friends and lived a “family first life” that those who knew him can cherish and revel in.

Denny was the son of Marion and Phyllis Michel, born on Oct. 9, 1945. He attended Iowa State University and graduated with a degree in Forestry. He worked for the State of Iowa DNR until retirement. One highlight of his career was as the Director of the Iowa Wood Association. An advocate for senior citizens, Denny was a consultant for United Healthcare Medicare.

Denny was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Trees Forever, Za-Ga-Zig Shriners, Story City Masonic Lodge, Arcadia Masonic Lodge, Story County Shrine Club and Cyclone Za-Ga- Zig.

Denny embodied values of true friendship and brotherhood that inspired others. He accepted everyone and refused to judge or dismiss anyone. He did whatever was needed, never expecting praise or gratitude, and always with a smile. He had the ability to listen and console those in need. His gravitational pull was immense and his death leaves a mighty void in our hearts and daily lives.

Denny had a life-long love of the outdoors, nature, the trees, the Iowa River valleys and evening campfires with friends. He so enjoyed being with people, hearing and telling funny stories, and laughing so hard he’d cry. Any music with which he could accompany on the bones was a bonus.

Those who love him are comforted that he is no longer in pain - no longer confined to a hospital bed. He has earned his eternal rest. He’s free and his spirit is with the Lord. In this thought we rejoice and find PEACE.

It is our turn to be worthy of the example he set: to live life, love every moment of fellow-ship, and be present in this World.

Denny is survived by his wife Gini; four children: Todd (Holly) Michel, Tim (Kris) Michel, Amy
(Rick) Sweet and Caleb Michel; five grandchildren: Logan, Karly and Noel Michel and Brady and Abigayle Sweet. He is survived by his mother, Phyllis Michel, and five siblings: Rod Michel, Janelle (Russ) Deitloff, Randall (Judy) Michel, Jill (Brad) Stehly and brother-in-law Rich (Jacque) Moline and numerous nephews and nieces.

Denny was preceded in death by his first wife Cathy Comfort Michel, his father, Marion Michel, his sister Janet Moline and his sister-in-law Marie Michel.

Visitation is Fri., Nov. 23 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Grace Methodist Church in Story City. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 24 also at Grace Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Grace Methodist Church or to Story City Trees Forever. Online condolences may be left for Denny’s family at www.adamssoderstrum.com.
