Obituary for Kathleen Lou Baker

Kathleen Baker, age 90, of Ames, passed away on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at Mercy Hospice House in Johnston.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, October 25, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church in Ames. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 P.M. on Wednesday at the Adams Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Ames Municipal Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Adams Funeral Home and online condolences may be left for the family at www.adamssoderstrum.com.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church, 516 Kellogg Ave., Ames, Iowa 50010.

Born on November 3, 1927, Kathleen was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson and Floy (Riggs) Barnes in Des Moines, Iowa. She graduated from Norwalk High School and AIB College of Business in Des Moines. Kathleen was very proud of her time traveling the country and playing women’s basketball in the 1940’s. She was united in marriage to Carl G. Baker on April 9, 1950 in Des Moines. They moved to Ames and Kathleen worked as a secretary for an attorney and Pastor Wilkens. She also typed theses. Kathleen was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ames, where she taught Sunday School for 35 years. She sang in the Sweet Adeline’s, was president of Women’s Society of World Service, was Den Mother for the Boy Scouts, and delivered Meal on Wheels.

Kathleen is survived by her children: Julie (Paul) Taylor of Ankeny, and Steven T. (Barbara) Baker of Muskegon, Michigan; four grandchildren: Becky J. Moore, Jeff (Robert) Reyna Moore, Justin (Christy) Carroll, and Jody (Kevin) Russell; five great-grandchildren: Taylor, McKinnsey, Easton, Elijah, and Kaylee; and a nephew, Gary Snider of West Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Carl on April 18, 1987; a daughter, Diane Schell; a nephew, Mark Snider; and a sister, Ruth (Dean) Snider.
