Bert Hitchings Dead, Funeral Services Here on Tuesday

Funeral rites for Bert Hitchings, 74, well known farmer, who died at his home northeast of Nevada, Saturday evening at 5 o'clock, will be held Tuesday at 2:30 from the Morfoot Funeral Chapel, with Dr. J. O. Simon of Memorial Lutheran church in charge. Interment will follow in the Nevada cemetery.

William Bert Hitchings, son of George and Naomi Hitchings, was born on a farm near Guthrie Center, April 2, 1878 and died near Nevada, Oct. 31, 1942. Spending the most of his boyhood days in northern Boone and southern Webster counties, he came to Story county when a young man of 18 years and here he was married the Anna Elder*, November 9, 1899.

Mr. Hitchings leaves besides his wife the eight children born to them. The children are Mrs. Bessie Godbey of Omaha, Mrs. Florence Smith of Nevada, Ralph Hitchings of near Nevada, Russel Hitchings of near Marshalltown, Marion Hitchings of Fernald, Earl Hitchings of north of Nevada, Lyle Hitchings of the U. S. army stationed at Camp Robison, Little Rock, Arkansas, and Vera, now Mrs. Carl Sandrock of 1236 Seventh street, Nevada.

Mr. Hitchings has spent his entire live in the pursuit of agriculture and his large family of children was raised to manhood and womanhood on a Story county farm.

Last February the necessity of amputation of the left shoulder and arm of Mr. Hitchings marked the beginning of the trouble that resulted in his death, after much pain and suffering, during which time he met all with patience and fortitude.

He was baptized and accepted the Christian faith as a young man in Boone county. After moving to Story county he continued in the faith and was a member of the Johnson Grove church.

His life was marked by his industry and honesty of purpose and he was man highly respected by all who knew him.

A kind husband and father he was deeply loved by members of his large family and was also held n the highest of esteem by a wide circle of neighbors and friends.

Besides the wife and eight children born to them, a brother, Charles Hitchings of White River, S. D., two sisters Mrs. Harvey Larson of White River, S. D., and Mrs. Melva Bausch of Gregory, S. D. and nineteen grandchildren.

*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: According to marriage records, William Bert Hitchings married Louise Anna Edler (not Elder as stated) on 19 November 1899 in Richland Township, Story County, Iowa.
