Death of One of Story County Pioneers
Mrs. Elizabeth Ward passed from this life Wednesday at 2:00 p. m. April 28, 1920. Elizabeth Harding was the third child in a family of eight children, born to Jesse and Hannah Harding. She was born in St. Joe county, Indiana, October 21, 1825. She was united in marriage to Dr. John Dailey, February 2, 1851. Three daughters were born to them, all of whom passed from this life many years ago. During the Civil war Dr. and Mrs. Dailey and their family moved to Story county, Iowa. Dr. Dailey died March 29, 1874. In the early 80's Mrs. Dailey was united in marriage with Mr. Benjamin Ward. About ten years later she was again left a widow. Early in life she was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal church and remained a faithful member to the end of a long life. She was always energetic and kind hearted, always ready to do a kind deed for the neighbors and friends. There are many families still in Colo who can recall the assistance she rendered in their homes during periods of illness. She took the place of another to several of her grandchildren who were left motherless. Those nearest her have realized for several years that she was failing, but she kept her home, living alone and doing her own house work until shortly after new years, when she fell and injured her hip and has since been unable to care for herself. Her only remaining sister, Mrs. Mary C. Fuller, of Denison, her granddaughter, Mrs. E. H. Hemping, and husband and her neighbors tenderly cared for her until she passed away as stated, aged 94 years, 6 months and 7 days. She leaves to mourn their loss her sister, Mrs. Fuller, her step-son, Chas. C. Dailey, and family of Council Bluffs, six grandchildren, John Rogers of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Queenie Hemping of Colo, Mrs. Gertie Root of Colorado, Jacob and Benjamin Belt and Chas. Martin; seven great grandchildren, besides several other relatives and wide circle of friends who rejoice held in the M. E. church this afternoon, conducted by her pastor, Rev. E. J. Laird. Interment was made in the Colo cemetery.
