Funeral Services Held For Mrs. Helen Nelson

STORY CITY-Funeral services for Mrs. Helen Nelson were held in St. Petri Lutheran Church on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 17 at two o'clock with the Rev. Grace Johnson officiating. The payer [sic] service ws held in the church chapel preceding the service at 1:45 p.m.

Mrs. Robert Hermanson organist, accompanied Mrs. F. R. Kenney who sang, "In Heavern Above" and "Behold A Host."

Interment was in the Story City Municipal Cemetery. Serving as casket bearers were Julius Johnson, Lloyd Thompson, Arnold Anderson, Andrew Knutson, Oville Anderson and Silas Tungesvick.

Obituary

Bertha Helen Charlson, daughter of C. J. and Julia Charlson, was born June 11, 1874 on her parent's farm near Story City. She died at the Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames on February 14, 1957 at the age of 82 years, 8 months and three days.

She grew up and attended school in the Story City neighborhood and was baptized and confirmed in St. Petri Lutheran Church and was a life long member of that church.

She taught in the County schools of Hamilton and Story Counties before attendance at the Normal School at Cedar Falls. Later she taught in Story City and in the states of Nevada and Wyoming.

She was married in 1914 to Nels H. Nelson in Story City and with her husband moved to a farmstead in Wyoming. They returned to the Nelson farm in Iowa in Scott Township where she raised their three children, Kenneth, Charles and Hazel. Shortly after her husband's death in 11930, Mrs. Nelson with her children moved to Story City where she had lived until her recent illness.

Having been preceded in death by her son, Charles, her brother, Edward Charlson and a sister, Mrs. George Johnson (nee Josie Charlson) she is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Arthur (Hazel) Okland of Jewell, her son, Kenneth of Alexandria, Virginia, four grandchildren, Vivian and Helen Faye Okland and Kathleen and John Nelson. Also surviving are one brother, Elmer Charlson of Dows and four sisters, Mrs. Belle Downing of Torrington, Wyo., Mrs. Nellie Claggett and Mrs. Cora Treat, both of Lander, Wyo., and Mrs. Lenora Mehl of Washington, D. C.
