Two Story County Pioneers Dead

Two of the pioneer settlers of the northwest corner of Richland township, Iver Sampson, 87, and Mrs. Mary Furnas, 88, died within a few hours of each other today. The Iver Sampson homestead was in Section 6, while the Elwood Furnas land was in No. 7, just to the south. Mr. Sampson died at his home in Roland at 1:00 this morning and Mrs. Furnas at her home in Nevada at 10:30. The funeral of Mr. Sampson will be held at Roland Monday at 2:00 while that of Mrs. Furnas will be Tuesday afternoon at 2:30.

Roland Pioneer Called By Death Early Today

IVER SAMPSON, 87, DIED AT HIS HOME IN ROLAND TODAY

Roland, June 21--Iver Sampson, 87, for seventy years a resident of this community, died at his home in Roland early this morning, after an illness of several weeks.

The funeral will be held Monday afternoon. There will be a brief service at the home at 1:30 and the funeral proper at 2:00 at Bergen church of which congregation of the very active members, Rev. Mr. Sampson had long been one. Sumstadt will be in charge of the service and interment will be in the Roland cemetery.

Mr. Sampson was a native of Norway, Europe, where he was born 87 years ago, but came to America when a lad of sixteen years and had lived in or near Roland since that time.

For many years Mr. Sampson owned and operated a farm southeast of Roland, in the extreme northwest corner of Richland township.

It was about 24 years ago that he retired from active work upon the farm and with his good wife moved into Roland, where they established their home.

During the past few weeks, while he had been ill, the aged wife had been assisted in his care by the daughter, Mrs. Lewis Larson and other members of the family.

Mr. Sampson was one of the prosperous and respected farmers of the community reared a large family and accumulated a comfortable competence.

He was active in public affairs in his earlier days and always was active in his church.

Mr. Sampson leaves besides his aged wife, nine children. The daughters are Mrs. Charles Erickson of Windom, Minn., Mrs. Thos. Solomon of Storden, Minn., Mrs. Ole Olson of Heron Lake, Minn., and Mrs. Lewis Larson who had spent the past few months at home assisting in the care of her father.

The sons are Sam, Thos. I., Edw. L., Oscar and Iver, all of this community.
