Wesley Schonhorst, 96, of Slater, passed from this life on Friday, July 13, 2018 at the Madrid Home / Mercy Hospice in Madrid, Iowa
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial at Lincoln Cemetery, Alleman, Iowa.
Wesley Albert Schonhorst was born on the family farm in rural Slater on January 14, 1922 to William and Louise (Schweiker) Schonhorst, their third son. He graduated from Slater High School in 1940. On November 12, 1944 Wesley married Ruth Ann Wilson at The Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They were blessed with 5 children, Jane, John, Carol, Gary and David. Wesley and Ruth lived on their farm in Slater until they moved to Huxley in 2014. Wesley was a lifelong member of Salem United Church of Christ in Alleman, Iowa.
Wesley is survived by Ruth, his loving wife of 73 years; children: Jane (Steve) Shaeffer of Marion, Iowa, Gary (Cathy) Schonhorst of Mount Vernon, Iowa, and David (Carol) Schonhorst of Ashburn, Virginia; 11 grandchildren: Todd (Theresa) Shaeffer, Deb (Brice Janssens) Pasker, Jennifer Shaeffer, Doug (Lori) Schonhorst, Mike (Jennie) Schonhorst, Katie (Joe) Farber, Chris (Tiffany) Schonhorst, Brad (Elizabeth) Schonhorst, Matt Schonhorst, Josh (Emma Kittle) Schonhorst, Megan (Troy) Bergeson; 17½ great-grandchildren; in-laws: Marilyn Wilson, Wayne (Jan) Wilson, Ralph (Ardith) Wilson, Carol Alleman, James (Betsy) Wilson; and many nieces and nephews.
Wesley was preceded in death by his parents; a son, John Schonhorst; a daughter, Carol Christianson; brothers, William and Melvin; and sisters-in-law, Meta Schonhorst and Ruth O’Day Schonhorst.
Wesley was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
