Deborah Kathleen (Kathy) Shannon 59, of Madrid, passed away Friday, July 6, at home. A celebration of life will be held at 2125 Unicorn Avenue, Madrid, Iowa at 11 AM Monday July 9, for family and 3 PM for friends.
Kathy was born November 6,1958 in Mount Airy, North Carolina and moved to Iowa in 1971. Kathy graduated from Nevada High School in 1976. She went on to further her education, receiving her AS at DMACC in 1992, Bachelor's Degree in Forestry at Iowa State University in 1999, and her Masters Degree in Public Administration at Drake University in 2003. Kathy worked at The State Forest Nursery -- DNR from 1977 until 1996. She was a former Site Manager for Camp Sacajawea for the Girl Scouts of Moingona Council. She was a former Executive Officer and Risk Manager for the Department of General Services Fleet and Mail Division. She also worked for the Department of Administrative Services. She was Director/Bureau Chief of Facilities Management at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, and most recently she was a manager of the Western Iowa Division for FBG Services.
Kathy volunteered time to the Becoming An Outdoors Woman Workshops as a Firearms Instructor, also she spent many years coaching and playing softball in Ames. Other passions included camping, canoeing, golfing and reading.She loved spending time with family and friends, both two legged and four. Kathy was extremely proud of having the opportunity to mentor many people, young and old, throughout her lifetime.
Kathy will be remembered for her great generosity, personality, beautiful smile and favorite saying "It's all about the story!"
Kathy is survived by her wife, April Thorpe; mother, Louise Yoder; brother, Joe Yoder; sisters, Donna (Alain) Balmanno; Cris (Dallas) Eyanson; Jacqueline "Sam" Ligas, and Evelyn Yoder.
Kathy was preceded in death by her father, Jack Yoder.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Cancer Society, Animal Rescue League or the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
