Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Joan “Jo” Catherine (Smith) Dilts, age 83 of Ames, died May 1, 2018 at Northridge Village. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, May 5, 2018, at 10:30 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Ames Municipal Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 to 10:30 immediately before the Funeral Mass.

Jo was born to Charles Leroy and Romona Catherine (Cahalan) Smith on May 7, 1934 in Albert Lea, Minnesota. She grew up in Cartersville, Iowa and graduated from Rockwell High School. In 1957 she graduated from Mercy School of Nursing in Mason City.

She married Harold E. Dilts on August 3, 1957 in Cartersville. She was employed as a Registered Nurse in Des Moines at Broadlawns Hospital, and in Iowa City at both the University Hospitals and Clinics, and the VA Hospital. Following their move to Ames in 1962, she was a nurse volunteer for Red Cross blood drives.

In 1970 Jo established her business, Jo Dilts Produce. She provided vegetables to many customers in Ames including grocery stores, ISU Food Service, Ames Farmers’ Market, and Mary Greeley Medical Center. She retired in 2005.

She was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church and St. Joseph Nurses Alumnae in Mason City. She was a 30-year member of Iowa Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association, serving on the Board of Directors for six years. She also was a 30-year member of Ames Farmers’ Market.

She is survived by her husband, Harold Dilts of Ames. She is also survived by daughters, Kathy (Rick) Ennis of Ames, Linda (Don) Gallagher of Olathe, Kan., and Marsha (Trevor) Richards of Des Moines. She has seven grandchildren: Clark Ennis, Sam Ennis, Ryan (Jessie) Gallagher, Daniel (Lauren) Gallagher, Patrick Gallagher, Melissa (Brett) Grieser, and Blake Richards. She also has three great-grandchildren: Audrey Grieser, Sutton Grieser, and Marnie Grieser. Her sisters, Mary Catherine Selzer, Johannah Guttropf, and brothers, Paul Smith, Chuck Smith also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents.
