Olive Hazel Harrison was born October 25, 1919, in Carthage, South Dakota, the daughter of Oliver and Anna Estella (Amen) Grapes. She attended the Argonne Consolidated School and Northern State Teachers College at Aberdeen, South Dakota. After teaching school for two years, she married Master Sergeant Jacob Heil in Roseville, Georgia. After World War II, the couple resided in Pipestone, Minnesota. Three children were born to the union, James Oliver, Linda Ann, and Paul Jacob. Jacob Heil passed away in June, 1965. Olive married Alden Harrison in December, 1966 and moved to Ames, Iowa. Alden died in 1989 and Olive spent the rest of her life at the Northcrest Community.
Olive was a homemaker, a stay-at-home mom, and a volunteer. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the P.E.O. Sisterhood—Chapter AA, the Order of the Eastern Star—Laura Chapter, the Book and Basket Club, and Hearth and Heather. She was an active volunteer in the work of her church, at Mary Greeley Hospital, in her children’s schools, the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, the Meals on Wheels program, and the public library.
Olive loved to cook and bake and share with her friends and family. She enjoyed traveling, visiting all fifty states and more than fifty countries worldwide. She filled her time playing bridge, reading, doing counted cross-stitch, and gardening.
She is survived by her three children and their spouses: James and G. Marie Heil, Anaheim Hills, California, Linda and Ed Lanctot, Payson, Arizona, and Paul and Joyce Heil, Nashville, Tennessee. There are three grandsons, two granddaughters, and four great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, two sisters, one brother, and three grandchildren.
