Obituary for Robert Gene Kalvik

Robert “Bob” Kalvik, age 60, of Story City, died April 21, 2018 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, after a courageous battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 26 at Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City. A celebration of Bob’s life will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 27 at Harvest E-Free Church in Story City.

Bob was born December 13, 1957 to Frederick and Beverly (Knouse) Kalvik in Story City, Iowa. He graduated from Hubbard-Radcliffe High School in 1977. Bob and Kimberly Jo Morgan were united in marriage on September 26, 1998. They were together for a total of 27 years.

Over the years, Bob worked at Butler Manufacturing, 12 years at Farner-Bocken Company, and the past 21 years at Iowa State University. He retired from ISU on November 14, 2017 due to his failing health. He also worked with his brother, Rich, doing various construction projects.

Bob was an avid hunter and fisherman, even creating his own custom fishing rods for himself and friends.

Here are some memories Kimberly would like to share:

"Bob loved to garden, planting at times a 100 hills of potatoes, which on occasion we would can or freeze. He loved to grill and I would ask him to cook some of his BBQ chicken, which was the best! Bob enjoyed sports and we loved to watch Iowa State football and basketball. He loved our many pets through the years and we used to call his the animal whisperer - and on occasions it even worked on people!

As a fisherman, Bob would go to Canada and did for many years. Before one of those trips, he proposed and two days later went to Canada fishing. He called on Wednesday for the weekly talk of 'how are you and Alex doing and what’s going on at home' and told me I wouldn’t believe what he was bringing home. I’m thinking he stopped someplace and got me a ring. WRONG! When he returned, what he had was a 44” Northern, for mounting on our wall. No ring. I told him when he showed it to me, that’s going to look real funny on my arm. Not long ago I told him I can’t ever get rid of it, it’s my engagement fish! No, I never tried to wear it.

We always had our laughs - like when shaving his head when he first started chemo. I told him the dog was upset because now she had to walk around him with a sticky roller because he was shedding!

God Bless you for taking a chance on Alex and I, not an easy thing to do, yet you did. May the sun always shine upon you, Bob. We love you."

Those left to honor Bob’s memory are his wife, Kimberly Morgan Kalvik of Story City; his son, Alex (Rachel) Morgan of Ogden; four grandchildren, Brodie Johnson, Leo Morgan, Lillian Morgan and Bryce Morgan; two brothers, Richard (Luella) Kalvik of Story City and Jon (Lorie) Kalvik of Des Moines; his sister, Janice (Mark) Burns of Chattanooga, Tennessee; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Beverly Kalvik.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Israel Family Hospice House at www.mgmc.org/mgmcfoundation or the American Association for Cancer Research at http://www.aacr.org.
