Thelma Marie Walker was born November 15, 1913 in Story City, Iowa to Norwegian immigrants, Tarald and Olive Lee, and died peacefully on March 28, at the age of 104.

Thelma attended grade school in Gilbert, high school in Napier, and completed her teaching degree at Iowa State University. After college, Thelma was employed as a Home Economics teacher for schools in Neola, Remsen, and Milford Township in Story County.

She married Leon W. Walker on May 4, 1940 in Des Moines. The two remained married for over 62 years, when Leon passed away at the age of 95 on January 24, 2003.

Along with her husband, Thelma ran Walker Flower & Gift Shop out of her home in Ames for over 30 years where she became a treasure to all her patrons. Former students and customers frequently visited her over the many years following her retirement.

Thelma is survived by her sister, Ruth Larson of Urbandale; her son, Bill Walker and his wife, Camilla of Boulder, Colo.; her daughter, Mary Thompson and her husband, Michael of Austin, Texas; and her son, Dr. Thomas Walker and his wife, Peggy of Lynchburg, Va. She was blessed with nine grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon W. Walker; her parents, Tarald and Olive Lee; her brothers, Joseph Lee, Donald Lee and Leonard Lee; her sister, Helen Soderstrum; and an infant great-grandchild.

Her passion and enthusiasm for life and people was unwavering and will be forever remembered. The kind and loving spirit she demonstrated to all will leave a large void in the lives she touched.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 3 at Adams Funeral Home in Ames.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 4 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames, with burial to follow at Ames Municipal Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 2900 Hoover Ave., Ames, IA 50010.
