Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Gary Groat, 75, of Ames, passed away December 13, 2017 at Accura Healthcare in Ames. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., Sunday, December, 17 at Adams Funeral Home in Ames. Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 18 at First United Methodist Church in Ames.

Gary Lynn Groat was born April 16, 1924 [transcriber note: age and other sources indicate this should be 1942] to Marvin and Irma (Knudson) in Harlan, Iowa. He graduated from Ames High School and began his career as a traffic technician, retiring for the Iowa DOT in 2002. On February 12, 1967, he married Jennifer Darnell at First United Methodist in Ames. Gary was a member of the American Legion Post #37, the Ames Moose Lodge, and the Ames Elks Lodge. His hobbies included golf, and was an avid HO gauge model railroader. Gary also enjoyed cheering on the Iowa State Cyclones and the Kansas City Chiefs, and attending the Knoxville Nationals.

Gary is survived wife, Jennifer Groat of Ames; his sons, Steve (Shannon) Groat of Nevada and Scott Groat of Ames; his sister, Connie (Gene) Bartmess of Albuquerque, N.M.; and six grandchildren, Zoe, Cameron, Brendon, Kaelan, Colyn and Kaleigh.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be designated to Mary Greely Hospice or First United Methodist Church
