Earl Wataru Ogawa, 83, passed away at Greenhills Healthcare Center in Ames, Iowa on October 14, 2017. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 20, 2017 at Stevens Memorial Chapel (607 28th St., Ames, Iowa 50010).
He was born on September 21, 1934 in Eleele, Hawaii to William and Florence (Yokoyama) Ogawa. He graduated from Waimea High School in 1952. Earl went on to obtain his Bachelor's degree from Indiana Institute of Technology in 1956.
Earl married the love of his life Ikue Ogawa (Arikawa) on June 28, 1958 in Hilo, Hawaii. The couple was blessed with 32 years of marriage.
Earl was a longtime resident of Ames, and was a long time supporter of the Iowa State athletics. He was fond of the beauty of orchids, and had the patience and talent to become an adept orchid grower. Earl developed an interest in soccer as it emerged in Ames, and spent several years coaching and mentoring the Ames High girls' soccer team. He was a dedicated runner, particular after retirement, participating in numerous road races in central Iowa.
He is survived by his son and daughter in-law, Anthony and Aimie Ogawa, as well as his granddaughters, Ariel and Autumn Ogawa from San Mateo CA, his brother, Glenn Ogawa of Kalaheo, HI, and his sister, Hazel Ogawa-Lerman of Honolulu, HI.
Earl was preceded in death by his wife, Ikue (Arikawa) Ogawa.
