From Rasmusson-Bacon Funeral Home & Crematory obituary, Nevada and Maxwell, Story County, Iowa:
Berneice Pauline Shenkle Brownfield, age 99, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 9, 2017. She was born the second of 12 children on July 1, 1918, in Collins, Iowa, to William and Orva Shenkle. As one of the older children she learned very early how to sew, bake, and shepard children--three skill sets she continued to use and perfect throughout her life. She graduated from Collins High School in 1937.
Berneice and husband Glenn “Tony” Brownfield were married on August 20, 1941. After returning from World War II, they chose to become longtime residents of Colo, Iowa and a couple who were very active in the Community, Clubs, Committees and as members of the Colo EUB Church and the Colo United Methodist Church. She greatly enjoyed teaching the little ones in her Sunday School classes.
Berneice’s daughter remembers her mother as someone who was always busy, whether it was baking great cinnamon rolls for her family or cakes and pies for socials; sewing Easter and prom dresses or the bridesmaid dresses for her sisters’ weddings. Then there was refinishing and upholstery of furniture; cake decorating, flower arranging, ceramic painting; crocheting, knitting and quilting; tending her vegetable and flower gardens; and, of course, her oil paintings we all have enjoyed.
Berneice is survived by her daughter Sandra K. Deems and her husband Richard of Scottsdale, Arizona; granddaughter Sonja McKiness Perez and great-grandson Michael Vincent Perez of Phoenix, Arizona; also five sisters, Hildred Spence of Marshalltown, Jean Day of Marshalltown, Arlene Cripps of Marshalltown, Shirley Nicholson and husband Rich of Marshalltown, Sherry Meier of Ames, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends.
Berneice was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Dayton Brownfield, her parents, William and Orva Shenkle and six siblings; sisters Frances Rowe, Wilma Shenkle, Jane Simons and brothers William “Bill” Shenkle, John Shenkle, Frank Shenkle.Visitation will be Saturday morning, October 14, 2017 one hour prior to the service at the Colo United Methodist Church. Memorial Service and a celebration of Berneice’s life will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, October 14, 2017, at the Colo United Methodist Church, Colo, Iowa with The Reverend Douglas Harding officiating. Interment will follow at the Colo Cemetery in Colo, Iowa. Lunch will be served at the Colo United Methodist Church for family and friends following the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Colo United Methodist Church.
