Mrs. James Nowning

Abigail Smith was born in Marion County, Indiana March 18, 1846 and died at the home of her daughter Mrs Chas. Wade south of Collins August 7, 1913 aged 67 years 4 months and 21 days. She was married to James Nowning April 12 1866. Ten children were born to this union six daughters and four sons. Her husband and two daughters preceded her to the world beyond. Mrs. Nowning was has been a patient sufferer for a number of years and more than once in the last two years her friends have thought the end was near but she would rally and be able to get around again. Her home was with her son Chalmer and family on the old home stead six miles south of Colo, but she was visiting her daughter Mrs. Chas. Wade and family south of Collins where on Tuesday morning she was out in the garden and was taken suddenly sick. She became unconscious and never regained consciousness passing to the great beyond Thursday evening. Funeral services were held at the U. E. church in Iowa Center Saturday at 11 a. m. conducted by Rev. C. H. Burton pastor of the U. B. church at Seymour and she was laid to rest beside her husband in the Iowa Center Cemetery. More than fifty years have passed since Mr. and Mrs. Nowning moved into the Dalton neighborhood. She has been a faithful member of the U. B. church for years. She was a woman of true Christian character dearly beloved by all who knew her and her death is a cause of grief to a host of friends besides these she leaves to mourn her loss two brothers; one was present at the funeral, the other living in Indiana, eight children who were all present at the funeral, seventeen grandchildren and two great grand children besides numerous other relatives. Sincere sympathy is extended to the bereaved ones by the entire community.

SUBMITTER'S NOTE: "Mrs. C. T. Ayers" was Carrie Belle Nowning who married Charles Theodore Ayers 1 January 1899 in Story County, Iowa.
