Henry James Vander Gaast of Ames, formerly of the Netherlands, passed away on August 20, 2017 at his home in Ames, Iowa. He was 84 years old. Henry was born to Janke Veld Kamp and Jitze van der Gaast on September 4, 1932 in Oosterwolde Friesland in the Netherlands. He immigrated to the United States in 1948, along with his parents, 2 younger sisters, and a younger brother. The family settled on a farm near Everley, Iowa. Henry was married to Severa Maria Alida Sohpia Sweerman on May 5, 1954 in the Netherlands.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Severa and his second wife, Patricia Francis.

He is survived by his children Nadia, Yvette, Robert, Michael, Melinda, Mariella, and John; His sisters Jeannette Arms and Bernadine Amundson, and his younger brother William Vander Gaast.

A mass celebrating his life will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Ames on Saturday August 26, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. Family will receive visitors before mass at 9:30 a.m. at the church. Henry will be laid to rest in the Ames Municipal Cemetery. There will be a picnic celebration at Inis Grove Park in Ames at the Red Oak Shelter immediately following the interment.
