Thomas Glasson 86, of Pontiac, Michigan formally of Ames, passed away at his home August 6, there will be a visitation from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm Saturday, August 12, at Adams Funeral Home in Ames, with burial following at the Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Thomas Lawrence Glasson was born October 24, 1930 in Ames, Iowa to Leonard and Blanche (Lamay) Glasson. Tom was a member of the VFW in Pontiac, Michigan. He was attending college when as he put it “yanked into the service” he was a Korean War veteran serving in the Army from 1950 – 1953 serving in the Asian Pacific region. He became a documenting photographer with the U.S. Army spending time in both Japan and Korea. After military service, he became a Scientific & Technical photographer, documenting for the National Animal Disease Center, part of the U.S. Agricultural Department, from a lab in Ames, Iowa.
Having worked for thirty-three years and upon retirement, he moved to Michigan and married his wife, Toyo.
Tom’s pastimes were barbecuing on his grill and watching television. He enjoyed cooking a good meal whether it was breakfast, lunch or dinner. If he wasn’t cooking on his grill he might be watching a television program about cooking. This would often carry over to the QVC channel or Home Shopping Network to see what were the latest products or gadgets they were promoting.
He enjoyed watching the prominent Saturday college football game for the week or an NFL game on Sunday. After arriving in Michigan, he jumped on the Detroit Lions bandwagon and would often joke about “in what way will they lose the game this week!.” As well, he would like to catch a Detroit Red Wings hockey game when they were playing on TV.
Tom was a fan of old Western movies and television series such as Gunsmoke, Rawhide, The Rifleman or Bonanza. He enjoyed country music as well. Should the power go out, he would often grab his radio and listen to old classics like Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline or others.
He was well read and keep up-to-date on mostly local and national news events. After reading the morning paper, part of his daily routine was catching the noon, afternoon and evening news programs on TV. He wasn’t one for digging deep into politics although he could give his view on most political topics of the day if pressed.
Tom enjoyed television and marveled at the quality and clarity of the newer flat screen TV’s as they came onto the market. A fan of Sony products, he purchased a half dozen of them over the years for various rooms in the house.
Tom had a big heart and would always lend an ear when needed. When asked “how are you doing?” his reply was often “taking life easy.” Tom enjoyed having company over to visit and, upon leaving, would remark “you’re welcome anytime.”
His circle of friends was small, but close, in Michigan, and he regularly talked with his friends back home in Iowa. Although, as time went on, the contact became less frequent with some.
Over the past year, eating food became more difficult for Tom as he had a hard time swallowing. He expressed reluctance to see a doctor over concern what might be found. When news came of his illness, he resolved to accept it as having lived a good long life.
Always attentive to his fiscal responsibilities, such as utility, tax and insurance bills, Tom persisted over the last couple of months to ensure his affairs were in order and his wife, Toyo, was well taken care of. It was part of the Japanese creed that Tom accepted and adhered to.
His passing is a great loss to his friends and family. Though he will be missed, he will often be thought about. Tom was a Dear Husband, Brother and Friend.
Thomas is survived by his wife, Toyo Wargo ; step son, Yukio Wargo; step grandson, Joseph Wargo and brother, Leonard W. Glasson.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents.
