Dorothea Margaret Dunagan Runge passed away peacefully June 15, 2017 in
Pocahontas, Arkansas. She was born on January 7, 1922 in Ames, Iowa. She was the
elder daughter of Walter M. and Dorothea Porterfield Dunagan. Her father was a
professor of Civil Engineering at Iowa State College in Ames. An excellent student
Dorothea graduated with honors from Ames High School and Iowa State College
studying History and Journalism. She participated in theatre and wrote for the college
newspaper. She was a member of Tri Delta Sorority and PEO. Upon graduation she
went to work for the Des Moines Register editing the Sunday Women’s section.
Recruited for the newly formed Office of War Information she went to New York City for
the duration of World War II in service to our country. In 1946 she married Major
William M. Runge of Davenport, Iowa. The marriage produced three sons. She was an
active member of the Methodist Church and the Episcopal Church serving as a Sunday
school teacher. She served as a Cub scout leader, integrating her troop in Davenport,
Iowa in the early fifties. She later went on to work as a public school teacher.
Education had the highest priority in her life.Dorothea was preceded in death by her son Martin L. Runge. She is survived by her
other two sons; Walter M. Runge of Lampasas, Texas and James P. Runge of
Independence, Kansas and six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.Interment will be at the Iowa State University Cemetery.
