OBITUARY

DEATH OF ESAU A. ALLEN.

Died at his home in Zearing Thursday night, about one o'clock, Mr. Esau A. Allen, aged 53 years, 7 months and 14 days.

Mr. Allen was born March 4th, 1854, at Bladensburg, Wapello county, Iowa, and there his childhood, youth and young manhood were passed. December 23d, 1875, he was married to Elzira D. McDowell, daughter of one of the early and leading families of that county. In January, 1881, he with his young family moved to Story county and located on a farm in Lincoln township a little south of Zearing. Here he lived and wrought until 1903 when he moved to Zearing and became actively associated with his eldest son in the hardware business, in which business he continued until his death. His fatal illness was of some two years duration, it starting with a severe cold and culminating in tuberculosis which defied all medical skill and even the alleviating influence of a milder climate.

Mr. Allen was a member of the Christian church and for more than twenty years had faithfully met the religious obligation thus assumed. He was a member of the Woodman fraternity at the time of his death and as such was honored and esteemed by his brethren. As a citizen of the town, county and state in which he lived, he was upright, intelligent, influential and helpful. In his death a good husband, father, neighbor, friend and man has passed to his reward. He is survived by his wife and his six children, Mrs. Bertha Wantz, L. C. Allen, Wm. B. Allen, Mrs. Florence Alexander, and Delphia E and Vernie L. Allen. The last two are still members of the parental home. The funeral services were held in the Christian church at Zearing; Sunday morning and were conducted by Rev. Mr. Scott of Marshalltown. The presence of a large concourse of neighbors, friends and fellow citizens testified to the esteem in which he was held.
