Ellis Joseph Anderson was born on March 26, 1930 in Clarion, Iowa to Otto and Pearl (Boynton) Anderson. Ellis was baptized at the First Methodist Church in Clarion and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Randall. He attended country schools in Grant #3 and Wright County from K-7th grade. He graduated from Randall High School in 1948.

Ellis then attended Drake University in Des Moines, where he was a member of the Phi-Alpha Sinforia Fraternity of America. He sang in the Drake choir. Ellis enjoyed music from the time he sang his first solo at the age of 5.

He served in US Army for two years in Berlin, Germany. After returning from the service Ellis returned to Drake and earned his B.A. and M.A. in Music Education. His first teaching job was in Ackley and then taught at Emmetsburg and Eagle Grove. After retiring from teaching, he bought Yantis-Anderson Clothing in Story City. After selling the store, Ellis worked of Lubber’s Clothing in Webster City and then at the Randall Post Office.

Many remember Ellis being instrumental in organizing the Randall Fine Arts, which featured Rag Time Music. Continuing on with his enjoyment of music he brought joy to others through programs and concerts in Elim Lutheran Church, where he conducted the choir.

He loved to travel and made many trips the west with his nephews in tow. He also traveled to Norway three times and once to Peru. Due to health problems, Ellis moved to Timberland Village in Story City.

Ellis passed away April 19. 2017 at Bethany Manor in Story City at the age of 87.

He is survived by his sister, Margaret Thompson of Story City and nephews, Bruce (Lori) Thompson, Dennis (Patricia) Thompson both of Jewell, Terry (Linda) Thompson of Story City and Douglas Thompson of Jewell and several grand nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
