From Ryan Funeral Home obituary, Nevada, Story County, Iowa:

Ernest "Catman" Ludeman
February 20, 1922 - March 13, 2017
From: Nevada, IA

Ernest “Catman” Ludeman, age 95, of Nevada, died surrounded by his loving family at his home on Monday, March 13, 2017.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 17, 2017, at Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada. Pastor David R. Burling will officiate. Burial will follow in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery, with military honors by William F. Ball Post No. 48 of the American Legion. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to services on Friday.

Born February 20, 1922, in Tornech Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, Ernest Ludeman was the son of Henry and Louise (Thomas) Ludeman. He came with his family from Germany to America as a young child, settling in the Coon Rapids area. Ernest served in the United States Army during World War II. While traveling on a train he met Violet Finch, who was also serving her country, working on planes to support the war effort. They married on August 18, 1946, in Madrid, Iowa.

Following his military service, Ernest returned to Iowa where he farmed with his father, and later worked as a heavy equipment operator and farmer in the Adair and Menlo areas. In the early 1970’s, he made his home in Nevada to be closer to his children.

Ernest was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church and the American Legion. He was a very social man who enjoyed the company of family and friends and was always “on the go.” His competitive streak was evident when he played pool, cribbage, and cards. He had a natural musical ability and loved playing the accordion, harmonica, and even spoons.

Survivors include three daughters, Betty (Greg) Toot of Nevada, Janet (Donald) Konrade of Ault, CO, and Diana Lewis of Gilbert; a daughter-in-law, Shelley Ludeman of Nevada; 13 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1999; two sons, LaVern Ludeman and Ron Gardner; his parents; and two sisters, Magda Sahl and Anita Rath.

Ryan Funeral Home of Nevada has been entrusted with the care of Ernest and his family.
