Obituary for Edna Lucille Ward

Edna Ward, 96, of Pleasant Hill, formerly of Ankeny, passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Edna was born July 3, 1920, in rural Colo the daughter of Orville and Nellie (Jones) Weir. She graduated from Colo High School in 1938 and was united in marriage to Wilford Ward on July 4, 1940, in Zearing. Edna and Wilford lived in Colo, Nevada, Sexton, Norway (Iowa), Clear Lake and Florida before making their home in Ankeny in 1995. In May of 2011 Edna moved to Courtyard Estates in Pleasant Hill, Iowa.

Edna enjoyed making decorations from plastic canvas, cooking and baking. She will be remembered as a great cook.

Edna was a past President of the Rebekah Assembly of Iowa. She was also a member of the LEA (Ladies of Encampment) and LAPM (Ladies Association of the Patriach Militants). Edna also received the Decoration of Chivalry.

Edna is survived by her daughter Joan (Jim) Hoover of West Des Moines; her son, Melvin (Diane) Ward of Ankeny; her brother, Vern Weir of Corpus Christi, TX; six grandchildren: Pam Bormann, Mark Gerber, Laura Gerber, Matthew Ward, Andrew Ward and Heather Ward; and eleven great-grandchildren: Brianne Nelson, Kevin Gerber, Luke Bormann, Joseph Bormann, Kelli Bormann, Gabrielle Gerber, Nathaniel Gerber, Emerson Ward, Lincoln Ward, Alaric Ward and Adelaide Ward; and two sisters-in-law: Fern Weir and Jean Weir.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Wilford in 1998; two brothers: Harold Weir and Ray Weir; and one sister, Lois Jay.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 31 at Rasmusson-Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada (1418 Fawcett Pkwy). Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 1 also at the funeral home with Pastor Douglas Harding officiating. Burial will follow at the Colo Cemetery in Colo.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Edna Ward Memorial Fund.
