Clayton S. Mittlestadt, age 86, of Nevada, Iowa, died at the Iowa Veteran’s Home in Marshalltown, Iowa, on Monday, January 9, 2017.
Graveside services will be held at the Cambridge Cemetery in Cambridge, Iowa, at a later date.
Born January 1, 1931, in Marshalltown, Iowa, Clayton Seymour Mittlestadt was the son of Frank and Lillie (Pelham) Mittlestadt. He grew up in Huxley and Cambridge, Iowa, graduating from Cambridge High School in 1948.
Clayton served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Following his honorable discharge from military service, he returned to Iowa and, on September 8, 1956, married Virginia Aileen (Olesen) Larson in Council Bluffs. The couple settled in Ames where Clayton was employed as an auto mechanic at Rex 66 Service for 16 years.
Clayton was an ardent fan of dirt track racing and NASCAR. He built tracks and enjoyed attending and participating in races in Jefferson, Webster City, Boone, and Marshalltown.
Survivors include one son, Craig (Mary) Mittlestadt of Collins; three step-children, Terry (Holly) Larson of Boone, Steve (Linda) Larson of Ames, and Cheryl (Steve) Hausner of Radcliffe; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, Jerry Mittlestadt of San Diego, CA; as well as nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia in 2003; his parents; a step-son, Jim Larson; three brothers, Herman, Edward, and Jim Mittlestadt; and two sisters, June Aldrich and Helen Aldrich.
Ryan Funeral Home has been entrusted with the care of Clayton and his family.
