Death of Mrs. Sarah Smith

Mrs. Sarah Smith died last Tuesday afternoon at the home in this city of her son, W. H. Smith, of heart failure incident to the weakening from old age. Her funeral was held Thursday forenoon at the United Bretheren church in Ames, and she was buried in the Ames cemetery. She was one of the pioneer mothers of the county and she had passed away only after a long life devoted to the duties that were upon her.

Sarah Paddock was born in Sussex county, New Jersey, September 13, 1823, was married there in 1846 to Aaron Smith and with him moved to Franklin county, Ohio, in 1848; removed from there to Illinois in 1885 and to Story county, Iowa, in 1868; lived for a long time on a farm north of Ames, and in later years in Ames, where Mr. Smith died in 1885, has spent the last end of her life with her children and died as stated, March 1, 1910, aged 86 years 5 months and 16 days. She leaves four sons, Lee of Hood River, Oregon, W. S. of Nevada, Eugene of Ames, and Daniel, also of Hood River; also 8 grand children and 8 great grandchildren.
