ROLAND ROCKETS+ "Tis Jan. 30, the bell is tolling and death claims another one of our citizens, Eilert Watney aged 72 years Eilert Watney was born at Stavanger, Norway, 72 years ago, and came to America in 1840, locating in Chicago. In 1850 he was married to Serie Beaurem, also a native of Norway. In 1865 they came to Roland, Iowa, locating on a farm east of town. Of this union four children were born, Mrs. Joseph Twedt, Mrs. Henry Thompson, Sophia Watney and Charles Watney. All were living and present at time of his death. For 31 years Eilert had lived in this township enjoying the pleasures of pioneer life, and sharing its hardships. For number of years he had been a patient sufferer being afflicted with complicaion of diseases, death resulting from paralysis. A few years ago he sold his farm and moved to Roland when he became one of our best citizens. His ambition and aim in life was to do the right, ever avoiding the wrong. The funeral services were held at the East church on Monday, conducted by Rev. Holter. A large number of friends congregated to pay the last tribute of respect to him whom they had learned to love in life.
