Mary Jane Brinkman Harms passed away in the early morning of November 4, 2016, at the age of 73 of acute myeloid leukemia. Memorial services will be held Friday, November 11th at 1pm at Collegiate United Methodist Church, Ames. The family will receive friends following the service.
Mary was born December 30, 1942, to Norman Henry (N.H.) Brinkman and Mildred Jane Kimberley Brinkman of Colo, Iowa. She was a graduate of Colo Community Schools, Iowa Methodist School of Nursing, and Iowa State University. On June 11, 1966, she married Dean M. Harms at the Colo United Methodist Church. Three children were born to them, a daughter and two sons. They lived in Iowa City, California. Illinois, and Wisconsin before settling in Ames, Iowa in 1975.
Mary was a member and volunteer of a variety of groups and organizations including Collegiate United Methodist Church, P.E.O., Rotary, and Questers. She also enjoyed her bridge clubs and book club. She and Dean worked as volunteers at the Central Christian Ophthalmic Clinic in El Progresso, Honduras. She enjoyed music, gardening, travel, and her home, but most of all her family and friends.
Mary is survived by her son Philip Harms of Chanhassen, MN; her daughter Sarah Freitas (Gary) of Waconia, MN; her son Mark Harms (Lisa) of Madison, WI; four treasured grandchildren, Joseph, Ryan, and Julia Freitas and Evan Harms; two brothers, Harold Brinkman (Janet) of Nevada, IA, and John Brinkman (Maxine) of Mason City, IA, as well as nephews and nieces and extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dr. Dean Harms in 2010, and her nephew John Newton Brinkman.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Heartland Senior Services of Story County or Raising Readers of Story County.
