Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Allan Edward Sorenson, 52, of Ames passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2016, at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, where he was seeking treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia. A visitation with family will be held at Adams Funeral Home on Sunday, December 18 from 3:00-6:00 p.m. and a memorial service will be held on Monday, December, 19 at Memorial Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m. located at 2228 Lincoln Way. The family invites you to join them to celebrate Allan’s life at the Ames Golf and Country Club immediately following the service until 2 p.m.

Allan was born to Edward E. Sorenson and Sharon R. O’Malley on October 1, 1964, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and later moved to Ames, Iowa where he graduated from Ames High School in 1983. Allan attended The University of Iowa and graduated in 1988. After graduation, Allan accepted a job as a Regional Sales Manager for Maytag and was relocated to New Jersey. On July 28, 1989, Allan married Melissa J. Morrison in Iowa City. Allan worked in the Central New Jersey market for two years and was then promoted and transferred to the New York market where he serviced Maytag dealers in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Monmouth County, New Jersey. In 1993 Allan was transferred once again to Melbourne, Florida.

In January of 1996, Allan and his family made the decision to move back to Ames, Iowa, to become the third-generation owner of the Dairy Queen business; a business that has been in the family for 65 years and is still thriving today. During Allan’s 21 years as an owner/operator, he has expanded from one walk up window store, to building two new full service Dairy Queen restaurants and purchasing a third location. Allan was extremely generous supporting the Ames and surrounding communities with his Dairy Queen donations to schools, clubs, organizations and special events and functions.

Allan’s pride and joy were his two daughters, Sydney Nicole and Sophia Lahne. His favorite activities were watching them compete in their sports, taking family vacations, fishing trips to Canada and spending time with his amazing circle of friends. Allan was deeply involved in and served as the Vice President of his daughter’s swim club (ACAC) the past five years.

Survivors include Melissa, his wife of 27 years, his daughters, Sydney Nicole and Sophia Lahne, his father, Edward E Sorenson and stepmother Betty Sorenson of Ames, his mother, Sharon R. O’Malley of Plymouth, Minnesota, his sister, Deborah L. Joens of Johnston, step siblings, Linda Starbuck, Tracy Christensen, Bob Umdenstock and Diann Vega, mother-in-law, Sandra Libenguth, aunt Carole Lee Begg, brothers-in-law, Brian Morrison and Edd Pirkl, sister-in-law, Stephanie Morrison, nephew, Nathan Joens, nieces, Taylor Joens, Amber Vandenbosch, Brittney Pirkl and Arabella White and many cousins.

Allan was proceeded in death by grandparents, Edward E. Sorenson, Hazel Sorenson, Clarence Hanson and Alice Bartlett and sister in law, Leslie Pirkl.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the doctors, nurses and staff at The University of Iowa Hospital and MD Anderson Cancer Center for the amazing care that Allan received.
