Obituary for Winifred K. Neely

Winifred Neely passed away at the age of 75 on November 6, 2016, following several years of declining health due to Alzheimer’s disease. She was born July 2, 1941 to Robert and Verna Hudspith in Churdan, Iowa. Winifred was raised in Ames and graduated from Ames High School in 1959. She married Dan Neely of Boone in May of 1959 and they made their home in Ames. In later years, Winifred returned to school to further her education and earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Iowa State University. She worked and went to school during that time, and it took her characteristic perseverance and hard work to achieve her goal. Soon after her graduation, Winifred and Dan fulfilled a dream and made a very memorable trip to France to celebrate her educational accomplishment.

Winifred had a career in retail sales in Ames that spanned over 40 years. Her intelligence and work ethic allowed her to hold many different positions and earn several promotions. She was a sales clerk, mentor, consultant, and manager in many locations in Ames including Lucille’s Gift Shop, JC Penney’s, Brooks Women’s Clothing, Younkers and the ISU Campus Bookstore. Her sense of fashion in clothing was impeccable and was reflected in her own classic and stylish attire.

Winifred loved her home and was a talented home decorator and gardener. She spent spare time creating a beautiful house and garden that she cherished. She loved all creatures, especially the many family pets which included her dogs and cats. Many a stray cat had the good fortune to be rescued and doted upon by her. She was an avid reader and loved to learn.

Winifred is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Dan Neely, who spent many years as her unwavering and devoted caregiver; her sister, Carolyn Eldridge of Tucson, Ariz.; and her brother and sister-in-law, Duanne and Joyce Neely of Columbia, Tenn.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the very dedicated and professional staff at Riverside Manor South in Ames, Careage of Newton in Newton, and Hospice of the Midwest for the love and excellent care they provided for Winifred during her illness.

To know Winifred was to love her. We will miss her generous spirit, warmth and kindness, and sense of humor and laughter. She had a strong will and spirit and grace that was with her to the end. Be at peace.

Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. November 20 at Adams Funeral Home in Ames. Burial will be at 3:00 p.m. November 20 at Valley View Cemetery in Persia, Iowa. This lovely rural cemetery is the resting place of family members going back to the immigrants from the 1800's.

Donations in Winifred’s name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, see below.
