The death of this veteran was not due to any real illness but to the decline incident to extreme old age. He had been failing for some time, and the end was not a matter of surprise.

There he made his home and lived all of his active life, leaving there only when nearly half a century later he was ready to sell his farm and to make his home with his children. This he did first with his daughter, Mrs Brockett near by, and then after a few years he came to Story county a lived with his son at Ames. As long as he was able to be about he was an occasional visitor at Nevada, and when he no longer made visits he received them frequently from his relatives here. He was known here always as a man of sterling worth, and he will be honored by those among whom he was known. He was twice married, but his second wife died many years ago. His eldest son Thomas starved to death in the prison-pen at Andersonville; but he leaves six surviving children, numerous grandchildren and many other relatives. His children are Samuel Montgomery McCall of Cedar Falls; Mrs. Anna Brockett of Runnells in Polk county; Mrs. Amanda Baker of Ft.
