Laurence Banks Jr., 86, of McCallsburg, passed away on Friday, September 2, 2016 at the Zearing Health Care Center surrounded by his loving family. A memorial visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at Bethany Lutheran Church, in McCallsburg, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. His memorial service will be at Bethany Lutheran Church on Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Kathy Sandmann officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in the Warren Township Cemetery in McCallsburg.

Laurence Earl Banks Jr. was born on December 24, 1929 in Iowa Center to Laurence Sr. and Ida (See) Banks. He attended country school north of Iowa Center. Laurence married Isabelle “Jo” (Oxley) on June 12, 1949 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple resided in McCallsburg where they began raising their family. Laurence worked for Story County as a Maintenance Operator and retired in 1992. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, McCallsburg Fire Department, McCallsburg City Council, Chairman of the McCallsburg Centennial, and helped on the McCallsburg Park Committee. Laurence enjoyed spending time with his family, bouncing his kids and all little ones on his knees and sing to them, playing the guitar with the Terry Thompson and the Centuries Band, piddle around outside and in his shop with his grandkids, storytelling mostly about his childhood, watching family sporting events, eating popcorn and milk, eating peanut butter and onion sandwiches, and sharing his famous wampus cats stories.

Those left to cherish his loving memories are his wife Isabelle “Jo” of McCallsburg; children Larry “Boze” Banks of McCallsburg, Connie (Carroll) Woster of McCallsburg, Cindy (Denny) Cairns of Maxwell, and Sharon (Gene) Richardson of McCallsburg; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brother Jerry (Sue) Banks of McCallsburg; sister Betty Coffman of Vinton; sister-in-law Irma Banks of McCallsburg; 6 sisters-in-law; 2 brothers-in-law; many nieces, nephews, and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Gerald Banks, and 5 brothers-in-law.

Memorial contributions may be directed to family.

Fredregill Funeral Home, in Zearing, has been entrusted with the care of Laurence and his family.
