OBITUARY
DEATH OF MRS. STATLER
Mrs. Samuel S. Statler died at her home in this city between four and five o'clock this morning having been recognized as seriously ill for only about twelve hours. Mrs. Statler had been in delicate health for a long time and for the past few weeks she had not been so well but there had been nothing alarming in her condition and it was not because her two daughters were sent for but because it happened that they were able to get home; that both of them arrived last evening in time to see their mother and be with her in her last hours. During the day Tuesday Mrs. Statler suffered an increasing amount of pain; but it was late in the afternoon before she would consent to the summoning of a physician. She went down rapidly, however, and when Mrs. Carrie Flach arrived from the east and Miss Margaret Statler from the west, both on the evening trains, they found her in a critical condition, which lasted until the end.
Margaret Jane Stephens was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs John Stephens, and she was born in Beaver county, Pennsylvania, September 16, 1931. She grew up there and came with the family from there to Nevada in the spring of 1858. Here she met Sam S. Statler, who was then deputy treasurer of the county, and here they were married on March 22, 1860. Mr. and Mrs. Statler at once established their home here, and in Nevada they have continued to live all the years since until her death on this 23d day of December, 1908, at the age of 77 years, 3 months and 7 days. Mrs. Statler leaves her husband, her four children, Mrs. Carrie Flach of Amboy, Illinois; Ed. Statler of Nevada; Miss Margaret Statler of Denison; and Ferd Statler, who was until a few weeks ago in business with his brother in Nevada, but who is now in Utah, also eight grandchildren; her brother T. H. Stephen of this city and some other brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Statler had been a resident of Nevada for more than fifty years, and she and Mr. Statler would in another fifteen months have celebrated the conclusion of fifty years of married life, all of it spent in Nevada. Identified from the early beginnings with all of the pioneers who were at all of her age she had most numerous friends, and though her life was so quiet that the later generation knew little of her, there are left many of the older generation to join with her family in most sincere regrets at her death. At this writing further advices from the relatives are awaited before fixing the time of the funeral. Her brother John Stephens is expected from Montrose in this state, and her niece, Miss Harriet Smith, is expected tomorrow morning from Minneapolis; but it is not yet known whether her son Ferd will be able to come from Utah. Mrs. Statler was a life-long member of the Presbyterian church, and the funeral will be conducted by the local pastor, Rev. Hunter.
