Obituary From Mitchell Funeral Home, Marshalltown, Marshall County, Iowa.

Lawrence “Sonny” Lyons passed away peacefully at Story Medical Senior Care on Tuesday, August 30, 2016.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames, Iowa on Saturday, September 3, 2016. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time at 11:00, also at the church. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed in Sonny’s name to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Lawrence Sonny Lyons was born on January 12, 1930; he was the son of Lawrence Phillip and Frances (Roche) Lyons. He attended school in the St. Anthony school district graduating with the Class of 1947. On November 28, 1950, Sonny was united in marriage to Carol Eileen Bradley and they were blessed with four beautiful daughters, Jolene, Denise, Pamela and Laura. He began farming with his father and retired from farming in 1998. Sonny served on the Minerva Valley Telephone Company Board of Directors for 30 years. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus and also served in the ASCS office part time for several years. Sonny enjoyed working with the Habitat for Humanity for many years and was part of the Holy Name Society at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in St. Anthony, Iowa. After retiring from farming and moving to Ames, he enjoyed driving the passenger bus for Northcrest Community and was known as the “fun driver” by many of the residents. Sonny enjoyed fishing, camping, biking and his special training with the Citizens Academy through the Story County Sheriff’s Office.

Left to cherish Sonny’s memory is his wife of 66 years, Carol Lyons; daughters: Jolene (Doug) Williams, Denise (Heinrich) Thompson, Pamela Matney and Laura (Don) Knowles; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and many other family members and friends.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Kathleen, Rita, Lucille and Clista; and his son-in-law, Tom Matney.
