OBITUARY

Death of John A. Smay.

John A. Smay died at his home five miles south of Ottawa, Kansas, Monday afternoon May 20th, after being ill since last November.

Mr. Smay was born in Frederick county, Maryland on November 11, 1832. He moved from Maryland with his parents to Indiana in 1834. He was married to Rebecca Day, September 9, 1855, and in 1667 moved to Story county, Iowa. There Mrs. Smay died August 10, 1867. He was married to Isabel Apple, December 16, 1869, and she, with eight children, survives him.

Mr. Smay was an ordained minister of the Methodist Protestant church and preached for many years. He traveled the circuit of Peoria City, Ohio, City, Bangor, Gladbrook, Rhodes and others in different parts of the state.

Ten years ago he moved to Franklin county, Kansas and located near Ottawa where he remained till his death. A man of sterling character, strong convictions and keen intellect, he exercised a strong influence for good in every community in which he live. His funeral was held at Princeton, Kansas, Wednesday May 22nd and was largely attended. The services were in charge of Rev. H. A. Cook of North Ottawa, who was assisted by Rev. W. C. Harvey and Rev. Mr. Boggs of Princeton. The children who survive him are Charles Smay of Morgantown, Ind.; Mrs. Nancy Stricklin and Mrs. Clara Steele of Indianapolis; and Lincoln Smay of Story City, Iowa; Mrs. Minnie Wise of Oakley, Kansas; Earnest Smay of Edison, Nebraska; Elias Smay and Jay Smay both of Ottawa, Kansas. The children present at the funeral were Lincoln, Minnie, Eliza, Earnest and Jay.
