Obituary from Surls Funeral Homes, Williams, Iowa.

Margaret Adoline Groves
(August 27, 1917 - June 1, 2016)

Margaret Groves, 98, of Ames and formerly of Williams, passed away on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at Mary Greely Hospital in Ames. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 4th, 2016 at the United Methodist Church in Williams. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Surls Funeral Chapel in Williams.

Margaret Adoline (Millsap) Groves was born on August 27, 1917 in Northwood, Iowa to Lee and Anna (Lister) Millsap. She was united in marriage to Gerald Groves on May 5th, 1940 in Albany, Missouri. She was a graduate of Williams High School in 1934 and a member of the Williams United Methodist Church.

She and Gerald had a wonderful marriage of 56 yrs. and it was based on the fact that there really wasn’t much worth fighting over. She has missed the love of her life for the last 20 yrs. They were great partners, she helping him farm and him reciprocating with anything needing done around the house. They always finished their work together and then relaxed. Margaret was a hard worker her entire life and even at 98 years of age she wanted to help and not be waited on.

She and Gerald enjoyed traveling , camping with best friends and family, making homemade ice cream, practical jokes, and most of all their extended family. Margaret came from a long line of card players whether it was solitaire, 500, canasta or other games and she enjoyed playing until a few days before her death. She had belonged to a card club in Williams for many years

Margaret was quite regimented and most especially after her diabetes diagnosis. She diligently checked four times a day at very specific times. That regimen allowed her to stay in her home until the age of 92.

No matter her title of Mother, daughter, sister, Mother in law, aunt or cousin she was always there for all of us with her love, her discipline (don’t try to pull anything on her) and her caring ways.

She is survived by her children Dick (Carol) Groves of Onawa, IA and Gwen (Rich) Taylor of Ames, IA, 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gerald, son Larry, parents Lee and Anna, sisters Buenetta Schroder, Kathryn Barry, Delores Millsap and her brother David Millsap.
